The upper secondary school Framhaldskólinn í Austur-Skaftafellssýsla, FAS was founded in 1987 by the state and municipalities in Austur-Skaftafellssýsla. FAS has about 150 students in the school, but there are only about 75 who attend the school on a regular basis and the rest are distance learning students. The headmaster of the school is Eyjólfur Guðmundsson.
FAS offers general academic courses. In FAS, emphasis is placed on serving students’ needs in a personal way with a flexible range of courses. Emphasis is also placed on vocational training in accordance with current demand, adult education, and lifelong learning. In FAS, you can choose from six study programs: natural- and sciences program, Electoral studies program, humanities- and social sciences program, upper secondary school program, mountaineering program and mechanical engineering program.
The school offers distance learning that has attracted many students. Distance learning and computer-related learning is an important part of learning at the school and is constantly growing.
The Natural-and Sciences program is 200 credits and is divided into core, specialization, restricted choice, and unrestricted choice. The course focuses on natural and natural sciences. The course ends with a matriculation examination and students should cope better with the university.
The electoral studies program is 200 credits. The course is tailored to the needs of those who intend to specialize in areas that are not considered traditional university studies. At the beginning of the study, the student and the school make a study plan where the final goals of the study are defined, and the choice of course must be in accordance with that
The Faculty of Psychology and Sociology is 200 credits and is divided into core, specialization, restricted choice, and unrestricted choice. The course focuses on humanities and social sciences. Students who complete the course have acquired the ability to cope with university studies in that field.

The upper secondary school program is 90 credits. It is assumed that students complete the course in two years, and it ends with a high school diploma. The objectives of the upper secondary school program are tailored to the individual needs of each student, but there are requirements that graduation be at proficiency level 2. At the end of the program, students should be able to meet the defined final objectives of the program. Students should also have acquired general skills that are in line with the nine areas of key competences and basic elements of education.
Mountaineering program, which is a 60-credit specialized course in mountaineering. The program takes two semesters and ends at the 2nd Competence Level. The program is intended to increase students’ ability to travel in the mountains and wilderness in Iceland.
The aim of the mechanical engineering program is to educate those who intend to acquire the right to work on ships with an engine power of less than 750 kW and do not seek further mechanical engineering studies. The program lasts two semesters. It is assumed that employment participation up to the age of 18 provides the student with the basis that he or she can take on studies that are organized in accordance with this course description. The rights are obtained if the conditions for sailing time and vocational training are met.
The school collaborates with other upper secondary schools on distance learning. The aim is first and foremost to improve students’ access to as diverse a range of courses as possible and to ensure them the best possible preparation for further studies or jobs. Upon completion of their studies, students should have acquired general skills that are in line with the nine areas of key competences and basic elements of education. It is possible to complete a matriculation examination in a core study program at FAS with mountaineering as a specialization. It is also possible to complete a high school diploma with mountaineering as a specialization
The school council consists of two representatives of teachers and two representatives of students and the headmaster. In addition, there is a course director and headmaster in the school council. The role of the school council is to be the headmaster to assist and advise in the management of the school, like help with the school’s work plan, school rules, manners, student work facilities and social life.
Students’ social life at FAS is based on club activities. There are several clubs where students can get together. They can even start a new club to pursue their hobbies.Each club must held an event every month for the students at school. The social life in FAS is good, you attend school, meet friends there and have fun at school. The school regularly offers collaborative projects with other countrieswhere students are given the opportunity to participate in exciting projects and travel to partner countries. These are always fun activitiesbecause you get to know new people and learn all sorts of things and gain new experience
